Biography of Ailene Stamper
Ailene Lois Stamper, mother, grandmother, aunt, foster mom a family woman; a graduate of
Henderson Institute, Hampton Institute, Pennsylvania State University, classes at University of
Maryland, State and local workshops; a community activist, a member of many boards and
organizations, a well respected woman; a member of Christ Episcopal Church, a supporter of Plum
Point and Mt. Olive Methodist Churches and other community churches -a reverent woman; an
overwhelming concern about students, families, relatives and friends a well-loved woman.
Ailene Lois Stamper, was born in Henderson, North Carolina, one of seven children of the late
Moses P. and Cora Hart Stamper. She acquired her basic education in the local Episcopalian
Parochial Elementary School and the Henderson Institute, a Presbyterian School for secondary
training. After receiving her eleven-year education, which was not available to African American
students at public expense, she was more determined than ever before, to continue her education.
AILENE STAMPER
Ailene brought a ray of sunshine when she arrived in Calvert County in 1940 to teach at W.S.
Brooks High School. She was 21 years old. She often told the story that in her classroom
there was no blackboard and no desks only a sink, chairs, a window, and children.
